Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your largest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and greet others. Sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in light conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be a myriad of ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one trait, be genuine. With such a diverse range of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.
Another hurdle was the workload and difficulty of the material. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same struggle. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that others do too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke earlier about taking leaps – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My key takeaway from this component of university life is to make the most of the assistance being offered to you. You can never have an excess of support!
All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has guided me on how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
