Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are an aspiring student, it might be your greatest worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet people. Today, though, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breakers and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find others who share your mindset.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open communication throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned earlier taking leaps – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it is among the most beneficial actions you can undertake for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much help!
Ultimately, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the support systems from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to have fun even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
