Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to begin my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your major concerns. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I have made some of the finest friends I have ever known, here at this university and within this course. I have cultivated a second family here at Imperial, all of which initiated from simple conversations with individuals in comparable circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was handling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a notch up from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being propelled into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might see others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also don’t. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial thing to learn to do in the first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They sympathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had earlier. I spoke about taking chances before – I did take one at the year’s commencement by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are abundant opportunities to get to know the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to take full advantage of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
