Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the previous academic year, I can recognize a path of personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as an aspiring student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day of settling into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Nevertheless, as I sit here today, I can assertively declare that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it merely required engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s authentically yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another obstacle I faced was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a demanding environment can challenge your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to excel and recognize that students face difficulties. They connect with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized them sooner. I talked about taking leaps earlier – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can undertake for yourself! My chief lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never receive too much support!

Overall, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the various forms of support available from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
