By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and what is my current status?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most unsettling aspects of beginning university, and if you’re considering attending, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days prior to the term beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a leap at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this environment can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the realization that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you find something challenging to grasp, I can nearly guarantee that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges that students encounter. They show understanding and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role facilitated my connection with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illuminated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the diverse support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
