Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Facing the unknown was not exactly what my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a future student reading this, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others. Today, though, I can proudly assert that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced at university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, fear not! There will be numerous ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also learned that being genuine is essential. With such a variety of people across the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being placed into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with this sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are others who also do not. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They are understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year concerning our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the help offered. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
