By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I can recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This certainly stands out as one of the more overwhelming elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room as I was too afraid to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say that I’ve built some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I have established a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small talk with individuals facing similar experiences. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always the smartest move. If you feel less than ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. There are an array of diverse individuals within the course and university; you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I needed to navigate was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a transition from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; one might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me through those feelings, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can almost promise that there are several others who are equally confused. Therefore, seeking assistance is crucial. This may be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the teaching staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They want you to succeed and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They relate to the students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning of the year – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is an immensely beneficial endeavor. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s absolutely one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance being provided. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased through the plethora of support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself in conjunction with the pressures of exams and deadlines.
