Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future as I got ready to commence my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not what my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Now, looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently among the most daunting facets of entering university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day of moving into my dormitory, mere days ahead of the semester’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can say with confidence that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships during my time at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what’s the lesson? It’s beneficial to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be myriad ice-breaking occasions and events designed to help you engage with others. I’ve also discovered that being genuine is essential. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find peers who share your mindset.
Another obstacle I faced was the volume and complexity of the workload. There was a significant leap from A-level studies, and an even greater jump between the first and second terms. Being in this environment can impact your confidence; witnessing others studying may lead you to question your own capabilities. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with an issue, it’s likely that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to internalize in your first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to another important point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students encounter challenges. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us all year long. I only fully leveraged the pastoral support towards the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become more acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
Ultimately, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the support available from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and discovered how to enjoy my time despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
