By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re a future student, it could be among your top worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day retreating in my room, too daunted to step out and engage with others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what lesson did I take away? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the start of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in certain respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be a blow to your self-esteem; observing others studying may leave you feeling inadequate. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show compassion for students and keep an open line of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I talked about taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are ample opportunities to connect with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance you receive. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
