Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what has this year imparted to me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of embarking on university life, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be a concern for you. On my first day in my new accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to my intimidation about stepping out and introducing myself to others. Sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small talk with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean from this experience? I realized that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that, if you can be anything, be yourself. The course and university host a diverse range of individuals; you are bound to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes hinder your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel as though you fall short. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares your experiences. If something isn’t clear to you, I can nearly guarantee there are others who are equally perplexed. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which holds immense value. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has imparted to me that the feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the myriad of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has instructed me on how to derive enjoyment even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
