Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your greatest concern. On my initial day settling into my dorm, several days before classes began, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too fearful to go out and meet new people. However, today I can proudly say I have made some of the best friends I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in overcoming this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling with a topic, I can almost assure you there are peers who feel the same. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and keep in consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps initially; I took a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to get acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased through the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
