Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most nerve-racking elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and engage with others. Today, I can assertively say that I have formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I learn? It’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, be true to yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and even more dramatically from the first to the second term. Navigating such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel inadequate in comparison to your peers. What aided me was reminding myself that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They offer empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings surrounding university are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
