Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights did this year offer, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet anyone. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I recognized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of ice-breaker events to assist you in connecting with fellow students. I also learned that being true to yourself is vital. With so many diverse people within the program and university, it’s certain you’ll come across individuals who share your interests.

Another challenge involved coping with the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a discernible shift from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can weigh heavily on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is in the same predicament. If you don’t grasp something, rest assured that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Seek guidance from peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier the importance of taking leaps – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never receive too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the supportive resources available from staff and peers. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
