Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Entering this new phase was a stark departure from my previously introverted and reserved nature. Looking back, I now recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is undeniably one of the more daunting concerns, and if you’re reading this as someone considering enrollment, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my dorm, a few days before classes started, I spent the entire time confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversation with peers in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this? I learned that taking the plunge at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more considerable transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can sometimes challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies aided me during those moments, one being the reassurance that everyone faces similar challenges. If you encounter something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are equally perplexed. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace during your first year. Ask for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I cited taking risks earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and this is undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this segment of university life is to utilize the assistance available to you. One can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are almost always unwarranted and can be lessened through the various support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never truly alone and how to balance enjoyment alongside stresses such as exams and deadlines.
