Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self felt accustomed to. Now, in retrospect, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?
Among the first and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it could be among your foremost worries. On my inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day confined in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, reflecting on my journey today, I can affirm that I have cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, which all originated from engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I take away? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse assortment of individuals within the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the level of difficulty in the content. There was undeniably a notable advancement from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally lost. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students may encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had made better use of it earlier. I mentioned making bold moves earlier – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to become acquainted with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to seize the opportunities for support offered. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated by the multitude of support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
