Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with academic advancement, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too scared to step out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly claim that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you aren’t fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who are just like you.

Another obstacle was the rigour of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you there are others who share the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to excel and acknowledge that students face difficulties. They relate to students and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully appreciate the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the help available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the abundant support available from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never on my own, and it’s taught me how to find joy even in the face of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
