Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not what my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often represents one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student, it could be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can assuredly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I understand? I realized that taking a risk at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are likely to encounter like-minded people.
Another difficulty was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things supported me through this, one being the reminder that all are in the same situation. If something is unclear, I can nearly assure you others are confused too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson of the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges faced by students. They empathize and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks— I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never receive too much!
In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the support available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
