Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious and uncertain about the future. I was just about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most challenging hurdles was forming friendships. This is commonly one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, several days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I have forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and this journey began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that making an effort at the onset of the year is essential. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with fellow students. I also realized that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and campus, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a demanding environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is facing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, chances are it is to others as well. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson learned in the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and appreciate the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In summary, this year has revealed that apprehensions about university are frequently unwarranted and can be alleviated through the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never solitary and how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
