By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

A significant and initially intimidating challenge was establishing friendships. This aspect of commencing university is frequently one of the most frightening, and if you’re an incoming student, it may rank high on your list of worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, I can now proudly declare that I have forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this institution and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. What did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the start of the year is vital. If you don’t feel fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to facilitate your connection with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With a myriad of diverse individuals across the program and university, you will surely find those who click with you.

Another hurdle was handling the academic workload and the complexity of content. There was undeniably a significant increase compared to A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an atmosphere can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me in navigating this was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others are struggling as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial skill to develop in your initial year. Look for support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students endure. They show empathy and keep continuous communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so much earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps—I took one by becoming a year wellness representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that anxious emotions, both prior to and throughout university, are often baseless and can be eased through the diverse support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and how to derive enjoyment from experiences despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
