Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was just about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and joy. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve made some of the most incredible friends here at university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated with casual conversations with others sharing similar experiences. What did I glean from this? It’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the academic year. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a variety of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. What helped me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson in your first year. Reach out to both peers and faculty for support!

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department is excellent. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until late in the year, but I wish I had engaged with them sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings regarding university are often misplaced and can be mitigated with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never truly alone and has shown me how to find joy, even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
