Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I gain from this? I discovered that taking that initial dive at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be many ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being true to yourself is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your vibe.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a distinct leap from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first semester to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same waters. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you others are in the same position. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the paramount lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and instructors!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and understand the hurdles students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned making bold moves previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support provided. You can never have an excess of help!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the backing available from staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
