Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more fearsome elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes beginning, I spent the full day concealed in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, however, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in small conversations with others in comparable circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always the best option. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker chances and activities available to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse group of individuals within the course and university, you are sure to meet kindred spirits.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always great for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. Several factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others have the same confusion. Therefore, ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and academic staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the onset; I took a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to make the most of the support you are provided. You can never receive too much!
Overall, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support systems offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to savor my experience alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
