Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what have I gained from this experience, and what’s my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most distressing elements of entering university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my dorm, a few days ahead of the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Fast forward to today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever encountered at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. What lesson did I take away? It’s essential to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to meet others like you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging to your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me cope with those sentiments, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee that others are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in your success and comprehend the difficulties that students endure. They show compassion towards students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me establish connections with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My central takeaway regarding this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always misplaced and can be eased with the support systems available through faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
