In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the cusp of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Now reflecting, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current state?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and for prospective students, it might be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too nervous to go out and engage with others. However, today I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what’s my takeaway? I learned that making an effort at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking gatherings to help you mingle with others. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find people who align with you.
An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee that others share your struggle. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek guidance from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. As I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to make use of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
