By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was far from what my once shy and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I faced was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your largest concern. On the initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself. However, today I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever encountered, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, no worries! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also came to understand that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you are sure to encounter those who share your interests.

Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors assisted me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are also struggling. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most essential lesson to learn in the first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much help!

Generally, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the abundant support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
