By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and for any prospective student, it may be one of your top worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what insight did I gain? I discovered that taking the initiative at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you bond with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like yourself.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap up from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you might observe your peers studying and feel inferior. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the affirmation that everyone faces the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and keep open lines of communication with us year-round regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had sooner. I referenced taking risks earlier – I did make one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are countless avenues to connect with staff, and it is certainly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this area of university life is to make the most of the support that is provided to you. You can never have too much assistance!

On a larger scale, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the various support options available from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
