Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more overwhelming aspects of embarking on university life, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it may be among your top concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the entire day retreating to my room due to feeling too daunted to step out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most extraordinary friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely took some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I realized that it’s always advisable to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events are available to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embrace one quality, be yourself. There is a diverse array of people in the program and university; you’re sure to encounter others like you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and difficulty of the material. There was indeed a noticeable difference from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate by comparison. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also struggle to comprehend it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to pick up in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They aspire for your success and recognize that students experience difficulties. They empathize with us and keep lines of communication open throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I previously spoke about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the academic year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to build relationships with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to seize the help being extended to you. There’s no such thing as too much!

In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both leading up to and throughout university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated through the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never alone, and I’ve discovered how to enjoy myself alongside sources of stress such as exams and deadlines.
