Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my once timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a period of personal growth, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I currently stand?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, as I was too fearful to step out and greet others. Yet, sitting here now, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this course. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with those facing similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s essential to take a plunge at the year’s beginning. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will be available to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, embrace your true self. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I needed to overcome was the volume of work and difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, a much larger shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into that kind of setting isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me manage that sentiment, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing the same struggle as you. If there’s something you find challenging, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a handful of others who share your confusion. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be among the most crucial lessons to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your fellow students and from the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearing its end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is extremely valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the opportunities for assistance being presented to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In a broader context, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be alleviated through the various support resources provided by the staff and fellow students. It has made me realize that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
