Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a future student, this may be a major worry for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, today I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s advantageous to take a risk at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and gatherings to help you engage with others. I also learned that if there is one thing you must be, it’s yourself. With such a wide array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a significant leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive environment can be hard on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re confused about something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are struggling too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and instructors!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion and keep ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can undertake for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much help!
All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be soothed with the diverse support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
