Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more frightening elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodations, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day confining myself to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Nonetheless, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I have ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I derive? I discovered that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you are to embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are certain to encounter people like you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was definitely an elevation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same experience. If something eludes your understanding, I can nearly guarantee others are grappling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking risks earlier – I did step out at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My principal takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the help that is available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the many support avenues offered by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
