Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking this significant step was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your major worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet new people. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connection with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and on campus, you’re likely to encounter like-minded peers.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. Several factors assisted me in coping with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Hence, ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Seek guidance from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They desire for you to flourish and recognize that students often face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to utilize the assistance you’re provided. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never solitary and how to find enjoyment despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
