Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering. Embracing the unfamiliar wasn’t something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I faced was forming friendships. This can rank among the most frightening aspects of entering university, and if you’re a potential student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet anyone. Now, I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, beginning with brief conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? It’s wise to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and activities to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, be true to yourself. With such a wide array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a shift from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can significantly impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things supported me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling too. Hence, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain open lines of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was almost over, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to engage with faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

In general, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unjustified and can be mitigated with the assistance provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
