Back in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Adapting to the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I realize I’ve experienced a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights has this past year provided, and what is my current state?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is definitely one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student perusing this, it may be among your top worries. On my initial day of settling into my accommodations, a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had within this university and on this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I realized? I’ve come to understand that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be myriad ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also learned that if you can embody anything, be true to yourself. With a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with you.

A further challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a level up from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone is sailing in the same boat. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp during the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and are aware that students encounter difficulties. They empathize and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. I spoke of taking chances earlier – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best moves you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support systems in place from staff and fellow students. It has illustrated to me that I am never alone and revealed how to enjoy myself in the midst of stressors such as exams and deadlines.
