By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I readied myself to embark on my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted self was used to. Looking back at the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights did I gain, and what is my current status?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is a common worry for new university students. On my first day of moving into my new place, I remained in my room all day, too fearful to go out and socialize. Now, I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. The main lesson? Take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections. Be authentic, and you’ll encounter people like yourself.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel out of place when surrounded by those who appear to be managing well. Keep in mind that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely unclear to others as well. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—it’s essential during your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want students to thrive and are aware of the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. By taking a leap at the beginning of the year, I became a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with staff—a priceless opportunity. There are numerous avenues to get to know staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. Make the most of the resources available—you can never have too much support!

This year has shown me that apprehensions regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the assistance available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never isolated and have learned how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
