By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Jumping into the unknown was not a situation my once-timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period rich in personal growth, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more overwhelming elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your prominent concerns. On my inaugural day settling into my residence, just days before the semester began, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too daunted to step out and greet others. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in light conversation with fellow students in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that taking the initiative at the start of the academic year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to facilitate interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re bound to connect with those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and doubt your own capabilities. A few insights helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares your experiences. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly guarantee there are others who also find it confusing. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek help from both your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and fully understand the struggles students face. They show empathy towards us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our challenges throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of them sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I did take a significant step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. Holding this role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is an extremely beneficial endeavor. Numerous avenues exist to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently irrational and can be alleviated by the extensive array of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy life alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
