Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what’s my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming connections. This is often among the most frightening elements of entering university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my dorm, a few days before the semester started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I take away? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best choice. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re likely to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one of which is the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost guarantee there are others who also don’t understand. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Rely on your classmates and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They relate to us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully benefit from the pastoral care until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous methods to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the help available. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the various support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and has taught me how to enjoy my experience despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
