Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was preparing to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved and timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this past year, and what is my current situation?

A significant and initially overwhelming challenge was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was initiating casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I’ve learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous opportunities and events to facilitate interactions with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of people in the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a scenario doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek assistance from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is wonderful. They are invested in your success and recognize that students may struggle. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us all year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I mentioned taking chances earlier – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role helped me familiarize myself with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unjustified and can be mitigated through the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
