Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I now recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and for prospective students, it might be a significant concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room due to my trepidation about meeting others. Sitting here today, I can proudly affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with initiating small conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that above all, being yourself is crucial. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that there are others who are also puzzled. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Request help from your peers and the faculty!
That leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They are empathetic towards students and sustain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really tap into the pastoral support until the final stretch of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully exploit the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone, and has revealed how to relish my experiences even amidst stresses like exams and deadlines.
