Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my often quiet and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and lots of enjoyable moments! But what have I learned this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the most immediate and intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to new people. Nevertheless, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what was my takeaway? I realized that making a bold move at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, I learned that if you can embody anything, be genuine. With the diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a marked increase from A-levels, and in several aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few strategies helped me navigate through this sensation, one being the realization that everyone shares the same predicament. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is truly remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the obstacles students encounter. They relate to our experiences and ensure open communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I referred to taking bold steps earlier – I embraced one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it is among the most advantageous moves you can make for yourself! My key takeaway in this area of university life is to capitalize on the support available. You can never request too much assistance!

In summary, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and submission deadlines.
