Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

A significant and initially intimidating challenge was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be among your top concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was striking up casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, do not fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a diverse crowd within the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes challenge your confidence; it’s easy to observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is facing the same situation. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are also struggling. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I did take a leap at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many ways to get acquainted with the faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the available support. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
