By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, back in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day settling into my housing, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too afraid to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can wholeheartedly say that I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? It’s beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with peers. I also learned that being true to yourself is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find your tribe.
Another obstacle was managing the workload and the level of difficulty of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant shift from the first semester to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and start to question your capabilities. What helped me was the realization that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something confusing, chances are there are others who share that feeling. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson learned during the first year. Reach out to your peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make good use of the support available. You can never have too much help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased with the support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
