Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Jumping into such an experience was far from what my previously introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what lessons have I learned this year, and what is my current position?

One of the most significant and intimidating challenges I encountered was the process of making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of starting university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be among your major worries. On my first day settling into my new accommodation, a few days ahead of term beginning, I spent the whole day in my room, too petrified to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here now, I can honestly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in small conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking bold steps at the year’s start is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if there is one thing you can be, it’s your authentic self. The diversity of individuals within the course and university means you’ll inevitably find like-minded people.

Another challenge I needed to surmount was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was definitely a significant leap from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more substantial in some aspects. Being immersed in such a setting doesn’t always bolster your confidence; observing others studying might lead you to feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I only fully utilized the pastoral support towards the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking brave steps – I did take one early on by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which holds tremendous value. There are numerous paths to get to know the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance that is available to you. You can never have too much support!

On a broader scale, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are generally unfounded and can be eased by the numerous support avenues offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has also taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
