Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and significant enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a considerable worry for you. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and socialize. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with fellow students in similar predicaments. So, what did I glean from this? It’s wise to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities and events to help facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a wide array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a distinct escalation from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second term. Being in such a competitive setting can undermine your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. What benefited me was recalling that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find something puzzling, I can nearly assure you that others do too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital skill to acquire during your first year. Reach out to both classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The staff within the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to our situations and sustain open dialogue regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had embraced them earlier. I spoke of taking chances previously – I indeed did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s among the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this experience is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never isolated and has taught me how to find enjoyment regardless of pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
