Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a future student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my housing, just days ahead of the semester starting, I remained in my room the entire day, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I have forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I come to understand? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities will be available to aid you in connecting with others. I also learned the importance of being genuine. With such a variety of people at the university, you are likely to encounter those with whom you connect.
Another obstacle was the academic workload and the level of content difficulty. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and even more so transitioning from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can weigh heavily on your confidence; you may feel inadequate when compared to others. What assisted me was the recollection that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance that others are struggling too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson for the first year. Request support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the assistance offered. You can never have too much help!
All in all, this year has taught me that the anxiety linked with university is often misplaced and can be soothed with the support available from both staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
