Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it might be one of your major concerns. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others going through similar experiences. So, what did I glean? I learned that it’s always advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, it’s fine! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With a diverse crowd in the course and university, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and difficulty of the material. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can impact your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few elements helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who face the same difficulties. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may well be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek assistance from your colleagues and instructors!

This leads me to my next highlight. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undeniably one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the numerous support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy myself amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
