Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Ventures into the unfamiliar were not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be one of your largest concerns. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I remained in my room all day, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I taken away from this? I learned that initiating connections at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events designed to help you meet others. I also realized that being authentic is vital. With such a broad spectrum of people throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. What aided me during this time was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others are struggling with it as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and staff for help!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding towards us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by faculty and peers. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to have fun even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
