Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This can be quite challenging when commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I remained confined to my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best connections here at university and within my program. I’ve found a second family at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s crucial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, if you can embody one thing—be genuine. With such a wide array of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can affect your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to understand, others likely do too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to take away from your first year. Seek help from your classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students go through. They are empathetic and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position helped me connect with the staff, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!
In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the support provided by both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and guided me on how to have fun regardless of the pressures of exams and deadlines.
