By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. As I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and so much enjoyment! But what insights have I garnered, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the process of making friends. This is typically one of the most daunting facets of starting university, and if you are an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your top worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too fearful to venture out and socialize. Today, however, I can proudly state that I have forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? It’s best to take a chance at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you meet others. I also realized that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the course and university, you are sure to find those who connect with you.

Another significant challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can be taxing on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those sentiments, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If you’re struggling to understand something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to excel and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are abundant opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much support!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures associated with exams and deadlines.
