Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what’s my current standing?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it might be one of your main concerns. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day in my room, far too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with brief conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events will be available to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be genuine. With so many diverse people across the program and university, you are bound to encounter individuals like yourself.
Another challenge was the level of workload and complexity of content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain constant interaction with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned initially about taking leaps – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s genuinely one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the assistance being offered to you. You can never have too much!
In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are generally unfounded and can be alleviated with the multitude of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has enlightened me that I am never isolated, and it has imparted how to enjoy myself amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
