Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I can see a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons have I gathered this year, and where do I currently stand?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking elements of starting university, and if you’re a future student, it may be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Nowadays, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that it’s always advantageous to step out of your comfort zone at the year’s beginning. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be countless ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one principle, be authentic. With such a diverse group of people throughout the program and university, you’re sure to discover those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors alleviated those feelings, one being the assurance that everyone shares similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t comprehend, I can nearly assure you others are grappling with it too. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson in your first year. Request help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely want you to triumph and recognize that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had discovered it earlier. I referenced taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the wisest choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this part of university is to capitalize on the assistance you are provided. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
